Group working helps to develop key skills such as critical thinking, communication, facilitation, presentation and decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, presentations enable students to showcase their presentation design skills, condensing complex arguments into coherent and bite sized oral and visual content. Presentations also illustrate a student\u2019s communication skills and understanding of audience. The audience may be a tutor, other students or invited guests. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Benefits of group work and presentations<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Over and above those outlined above, group working offers the following benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Development of transferable employability and academic skills<\/li><li>Collaborative learning &#8211; sharing perspectives and experiences.<\/li><li>Encouraging deeper learning e.g. what is required from a task or assignment.<\/li><li>Active learning<\/li><li>Personalising the experience of students in large student cohorts \u2013 breaking them into smaller groups where collaborative learning can take place.<\/li><li>Building friendships and peer learning<\/li><li>Enhancing academic achievement<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Some of the general concerns and issues<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Students may face difficulties in <strong>group working<\/strong> situations in a number of ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students may face difficulties in <strong>presentation situations<\/strong> in a number of ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Presentation anxiety<\/li><li>Barriers to them following their materials.<\/li><li>A one size fits all methodology \u2013 assumptions made about how to present.<\/li><li>Past experience of negative feedback concerning eye contact.<\/li><li>Not being able to accurately read the audiences reaction.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Points for reflection<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How does your practice support the needs of students with regard to group work and presentations?<\/li><li>What changes to teaching and learning strategies could you make in these situations? Might you do things differently?<\/li><li>Who do you need to involve in order to make support for students effective?<\/li><li>What are the main barriers to you accommodating students\u2019 needs with regard to group work and presentations?
